This year’s Center for Korean Research Manhae Prize for Korean Language winners are Minjin Kim (General Studies) and Andrew Gabriel Ramirez (Columbia College).
Minjin Kim
Minjin Kim is a senior at Columbia University, studying sociology and philosophy. He is a student veteran at Columbia University and served in the US Marine Corps as a scout sniper for 4 years. He plans to pursue a legal education in law school upon graduation, and hopes to utilize his Korean language skills to help Korean immigrants who cannot speak or understand English for fair legal procedures.
Andrew Gabriel Ramirez
Andrew Ramirez is a senior in Columbia College, majoring in East Asian Languages and Cultures with an interest in modern Korean literature. He is thankful to all the faculty members in the EALAC department who have helped him develop intellectually over these past four years. After graduation, Andrew will be teaching English to middle and high school students in South Korea as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant, with the intention to start a career in academia or law after his time there.
The Manhae Prize is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate student in the Korean language program. Its recipients receive a prize and an award certificate.
The criteria for this prize are as follows: an undergraduate student who
1) has taken Korean courses at Columbia for at least three years.
2) has shown steady improvement in language skills.
3) has received an average of B+ or above in Korean language classes.
