This year’s Center for Korean Research Manhae Prize for Korean Language winners are Skylar Noelle Santa Green (Columbia College) and Jennifer Ryu (Columbia College).
Skylar Noelle Santa Green
Skylar is a senior in Columbia College majoring in Sociology with a concentration in East Asian Studies. She began taking Korean during her first year at Columbia. In the summer of 2019, she was awarded the Eugene Group Korea Fellowship through Columbia in order to fund her summer study abroad at Ewha Womans University in Seoul. Skylar is very grateful to all of the Korean language, history, and culture professors who have shaped her time at Columbia. As she is interested in the intersection of business, intercultural communication, media, and culture, in the future, she hopes to pursue graduate study in Korea, with a globally facing career.
Jennifer Ryu
Jennifer Ryu is a John Jay Scholar and a member of Columbia College Class of 2022, majoring in EALAC. She is an incoming J.D. Candidate at Harvard Law School. Jennifer is grateful for the profound relationships she formed with professors and mentors in the EALAC department and the valuable opportunities provided by the Korean Language Program.
Manhae Prize is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate student in the Korean language program. Its recipients receive a prize and an award certificate.
The criteria for this prize are as follows: an undergraduate student who
1) has taken Korean courses at Columbia for at least three years.
2) has shown steady improvement in language skills.
3) has received an average of B+ or above in Korean language classes.
